Choosing a CV photo for Sri Lanka job applications
Start with the vacancy instructions. If the employer requests a photograph, provide one in the requested format. If it does not, decide whether a photo adds useful information; your skills and experience should remain the focus of the CV.
Decide what the application actually needs
- Photo explicitly requested: check whether it belongs inside the CV or in a separate upload.
- Application portal has a photo field: use its size and file-type instructions.
- No photo mentioned: a clear CV without a photo is a reasonable starting point.
- Overseas application: follow that employer’s instructions rather than assuming every employer in a country wants the same format.
Take a clear portrait with your phone
- Stand against a plain, uncluttered background with even light on your face.
- Position the camera at eye level and keep your full face visible.
- Wear neat clothing appropriate to the role you are applying for.
- Use a recent photograph that looks like you. Avoid filters or edits that change your facial features.
- Frame your head and shoulders with enough space above your head. Avoid cropping a group photo.
Place the photo without weakening the CV
Use a small portrait near the contact section if a photo is appropriate. Keep your name, phone number and email as real document text. Do not turn the entire CV into an image to preserve the design. Preview the exported document at normal size and on a phone; the photo should not crowd out your profile or work history.
CV photo versus passport photo
A CV portrait is not automatically suitable for a passport, visa or identity application. Those processes have their own photograph specifications. Use the relevant official instructions for those documents. For the CV, follow the employer’s requested dimensions and file limits instead of relying on one universal size.
Check before you send
- The photo is sharp enough to recognise you and is not stretched.
- Your face is not obscured by shadows, filters or a distracting background.
- You have followed separate-upload instructions if provided.
- The exported CV remains readable and within the application’s file-size limit.
- Your qualifications and experience have more space than the photograph.
Frequently asked questions
Does every CV in Sri Lanka need a photo?
Do not treat a photograph as a universal requirement. Check the vacancy and any instructions from the employer or recruitment agency.
Can I use the same photograph for Qatar or Kuwait applications?
Use it only if it meets that application’s instructions and is a clear, current portrait. A destination name alone does not tell you the required photo format.
